Formally proposing the election of the Chairman to the Presidency of the Association, Mr. Byron Brenan remarked that the members had had evidence of his capacity as Chairman, and of the many gentlemen who had filled the position none had done so better than be. The duties of President were rather more ornamental, but he was quite sure Mr. Jamieson would acquit himself equally well in that capacity. Mr. A. G. Wood seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously.
On the proposition of the Chairman, seconded by Sir Walter C. Hillier, the following other officers were elected :-Chairman of Committee, Mr. F. Anderson: Vice-Chairman Mr. Robert H. Hill; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. R. Chatterton Wilcox.
The following General Committee was then appointed on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. F. J. Abbott:-Right Hon. Sir Cecil Smith, P.C., G.C.M G., Sir Thos. Jackson, Bart., Sir T. Sutherland, G.C.M.G., Sir Walter C. Hillier, K.C.M.G., C. B., Sir Alfred Dent, K.C.M.G., Sir Charles Dudgeon, Mr, F. Anderson, Mr. John C. Bois Mr. Byron Brenan, C.M.G., Mr. F. Cornes, Mr. Geo. B. CHINA ASSOCIATION'S INCORPORATED
OF PRACTICAL CHINESE.
SCHOOL
Report of Committee of Management of the China Association's Incorporated School of Practical Chinese, presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society, held at 99, Cannon Street, E.G, on Tuesday, the 23rd February, 1915.
Your Committee have pleasure in presenting the Accounts of the Chinese School for the year ending 31st December, 1914. The income from investments is less than that of last year by £110 19s. 11d., principally due to the smaller amount received as dividend on the Shanghai and Hongkew Wharf shares. Nevertheless the balance at the close of the year is larger by £45 2s. 5d than the amount brought in from the previous year. The Capital Endowment Fund stands at the same nominal amount as last year, the securities being unchanged.
The offer to appoint Mr. Edmund Backhouse as successor to the late Professor Owen, mentioned in last year's report, was on further consideration declined by that gentleman. Your Committee have consequently retained the services of Rev. S. B. Drake as Acting Professor, and they do not propose to make any further change until it is seen what steps are to be taken towards the opening of the new School of Oriental Studies in the City of London. Your Committee have pleasure in expressing their satisfaction with the efficient conduct of the School by Mr. Drake. A short report by him on the work of the scholastic year to 30th June, 1914, is annexed. Up to that date the number of students was highly satisfactory, but since the outbreak of war the attendance, has not unnaturally, fallen off very considerably.
The annual examination of the students was again conducted by Rev. W. E. Soothill, to whom the thanks of the Committee are due. His report is hereto attached.
Appended also is a statement rendered by the Secretary of King's College for the academic year ending 31st August, 1914, showing the receipts and expenditure during that period.
